Do you or your child shutter at the word writing? There are a few who LOVE writing. I was one of those children. Writing was so freeing and I had control over what went on the paper. It came easily to me, but that is not the case for everyone.
Writing is actually tough. Same as reading. These are not natural things we just happen to know. We have to learn them. What is natural though? LEARNING! If you open your mind to the process of reading or writing, and you practice, it should become easier. Some people might need more tools than others which is perfectly fine also!
I use grammerly.com to do spell check and grammar checks. Some might use voice-to-text because spelling is not easy either. Tools are what help us achieve the end product! Here is a fun idea to support your child's writing this summer! How we speak reflects how we write. Practice speaking in powerful sentences first. Build your confidence through speech before you even put pen to paper.
Make a fun “Who Do Hopscotch” with chalk. Today I started drawing fun boxes like hopscotch and ended up connecting them all together. Then, I had this amazing idea to write the WHO/DO. I should give credit where credit is due here because I did NOT come up with the Who/do. I learned it from Robi Alstrom an educational consultant I took a few courses from. She is such an inspiration for outside-of-the-box learning! Inside the boxes, I added question marks, addition signs, and a period. These were my code symbols for what you do next. Hop on a question mark, and ask a question. Hop on an addition sign, add more to your sentence, hop on a period, and finish the sentence or thought.
A sentence is made up of two things, a Who or what (noun), and a do (verb/action). A powerful sentence is made up of the who/do plus more detail and context. This is what takes a reader from logical thinking to magical thinking. Powerful sentences transform your writing into something more captivating! Getting our ideas on paper is hard but speaking our ideas is much easier!
So, create a fun hopscotch gameboard if you will, and get those ideas flowing. Start bringing your ideas to life. Ask more questions, who, what, where, when, why, and how. Draw pictures with chalk and then use your words to draw pictures in your mind! Build your confidence with this tool and when you're ready, start writing or voice to texting your magical story!
